I am SO excited about this! Growing my own wheatgrass has been on my to-do list for a long time.
I felt really intimidated by it and I guess that’s why I put it off for so long.
And, I’m not very good at reading and following instructions and am not very patient either.
But, those are really the only three requirements needed to grow wheatgrass.
If you can follow simple instructions and be patient, you will have a mega-house of nutrition at your fingertips.
For someone who can’t even keep houseplants alive, this is a BIG deal!
I researched and researched even more for growing mediums for the wheatgrass.
Although I came across some really nice units that auto-watered the grass, they were really out of my price range.
Plus, with my small kitchen, I wouldn’t be able to put the growing unit ~anywhere~ on my countertop, so hooking up a water apparatus to it was not even possible.
Then I found this relatively inexpensive growing tray designed by the infamous “Sproutman”, the Sproutman’s Soil-Free Wheatgrass Grower.
The price tag is right around $130 but it will certainly pay off in the long run.
The basic unit comes with three trays but the great thing is, you can add trays later if you want and the unit only takes up vertical space.
Since I had a little floor space to work with, but definitely not countertop space, this was a perfect solution for me!
And it’s really easy to assemble.
I say this because my 6-year-old put it together without instructions (remember..I don’t like to read or follow instructions so I gave him the important job of putting it together).
The preparation instructions were clear and had photos and were easy to follow. It also came with one starter bag of organic (very important!) wheatberry seeds, a water mister and all the tray cover accessories.
The first step was to soak and rinse the wheatberries which were really easy. After they start “sprouting”, you spread them out in the tray and the miracle begins.
Why is this such a miracle you say? This amazing superfood is grown indoors, without natural sunlight and without soil. Yes, that is correct…NO SOIL!!
I still can’t believe it. Every morning when we check on our grass, my son says, “I can’t believe it’s growing without dirt”.
It is truly amazing.
You do have the option of growing your grass with soil if you prefer, but I am all for the easy route.
It is also a wonderful teaching and learning opportunity for your children.
They get to watch how a dormant seed transforms into live living grass.
My two sons take turns with the daily task of watering and misting the grass. They each get a tray to take care of.
I can honestly say that this first batch was grown by my 4 and 6-year-old boys.
Once you have grown all this beautiful and nutritious wheatgrass, what will you do with it?
But you need to get a juicer that can handle wheatgrass.
The one I use (and purchased specifically for this reason was the Omega 8005. It works perfectly with wheatgrass and other leafy greens.
