Learn How To Do A Coffee Enema with step-by-step instructions and why organic enema coffee and purified filtered water is best to use for liver detoxification and to remove toxins from the body.
"The purpose of coffee enemas is to stimulate the liver to increase its detoxification of the blood and decrease the toxic load on the liver. This includes removing a variety of toxins and free radicals from the bloodstream. They assist the liver so as not to overburden an already sluggish and toxic liver with the flood of toxins dislodged from the clean, nutrient-dense food and juice of the Gerson Therapy." - The Gerson Institute
What Is A Coffee Enema?
Coffee enemas date back to the late 1800's as a remedy to relieve discomfort and pain in the body as it removed toxins from the liver and blood.
A coffee enema is an enema, just like a water enema, only the solution is made of specialized enema coffee. The coffee enema solution is delivered the same as a water enema, through the enema tubing into the rectum.
Once the enema therapy coffee is inside the rectum, the hemorrhoid veins absorb the caffeine in the coffee. From the hemorrhoid vein, it then goes up to the portal vein, which carries the blood supply to the liver and to the gallbladder.
The effects on the liver by the caffeine and palmitic acids in enema coffee are immediate and brought about by the caffeine, which is an irritant to the liver.
This irritant stimulates the liver bile ducts to open. Once open, the toxins can be released.
The caffeine in coffee enters the liver through the portal system and causes an increase in bile flow. The bile, in turn, makes the accumulated poisons and toxins to be released and evacuated from the body.
In addition, coffee enemas:
- Are a powerful way to detoxify the body.
- Are an excellent alternative to sedation or pain relievers.
- Taken in an enema is unlike drinking coffee - drinking coffee causes digestive problems and negatively affects the liver.
- Do not affect normal evacuation processes.
- Are not given to improve elimination.
- Should be given using stainless steel enema buckets so acids won't leech chemicals that can occur with plastic enema bags.
What Are The Benefits of A Coffee Enema?
The coffee enema is a gallbladder flush and liver flush. The coffee enema, without question, will provide prompt relief from pain – even severe pain.
Why is it such a great pain reliever? Because the toxins in the body pollute the blood, which in turn creates havoc in the body. Once the toxins are gone, the pain anywhere in the body is relieved.
When the body is detoxified, you can experience calmness, more vitality all over, normal bowel movements, mental clarity, joint relief, and headache relief.
In addition, coffee enemas:
- Can strengthen the body overall by removing toxins from the blood
- Help eliminate bacteria’s and candida in the colon
- Can strengthen and tone the colon
- Are given to stimulate the release of toxins in the liver.
- Are known to relieve depression and mental confusion
- Are known to relieve back pain, allergy symptoms, and arthritis.
- Must be done along with juicing organic fruits and vegetables.
- Can be taken without assistance at home.
A liver can accumulate a lot of toxins over the course of one's life.
Today's air, water, and food are greatly contaminated, placing a serious burden on the liver.
Detoxification of toxins can help you to stay healthy.
Here are some links to some helpful videos explaining more about the benefits:
"Coffee Enemas are a well-known, proven, and effective way to naturally detox the colon and liver of accumulated poisons and toxins, leaving you feeling refreshed, energetic and calm. It is a natural pain reliever as well and has been used by Dr. Max Gerson and practitioners worldwide in reducing pain in patients, as well as creating renewed health overall in the body." - PureLife Coffee Enemas
There Are 3 Important Parts Of A Coffee Enema:
The higher quality of these (3) important parts will yield more productive and successful results:
- Coffee - The Quality and Brand Of Enema Coffee
- Equipment - The Enema Supplies or Equipment
- Water - The Quality and Purity of Water Used
1. What Brand of Enema Coffee Should I Use?
There are many brands of "enema coffee" and even "organic enema coffee" on the market - how do you know which one to choose?
When you do a coffee enema, you will not be using the same coffee you buy in the grocery store to drink in the morning.
I highly recommend purchasing organic enema coffee for the same reasons I recommend purchasing organic produce and ingredients whenever possible - to avoid pesticides, herbicides, mold, and fungus.
Below, I'll share with you the brand that I use and why I choose it.
I've used a couple of different brands over the years, but PureLife Organic Enema Coffee is my enema coffee of choice.
Why do I trust PureLife Organic Enema Coffee?
- Certified Organic - Not only is PureLife Enema Coffee 100% USDA Certified Organic, but it's also Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth. This means the beans must be grown on an organic farm and the importer and roaster must be certified organic as well.
- High in cafestol and palmitic acid. Both of these are needed to open the liver bile ducts. Caffeine is the key to stimulating liver bile flow and opening the bile ducts. The higher cafestol ad palmitic acid content supports glutathione's antioxidant activation.
- Air Roasted. It's a very "clean" organic air-roasted coffee. Using the unique air roasting process, beans cannot be burned. The typical drum roasting available in stores can burn the coffee beans, making them carcinogenic. Air roasting delivers the cleanest coffee.
- Roasted on a tilted bed. The coffee beans are roasted on a tilted bed at higher temperatures. Instead of a rotating drum, beans are constantly mixed by the flow of hot air under high pressure roasting each bean evenly. As the beans shed their skin, this pressurized hot air blows the chaff into a separate chamber, instantly separating them before they can char and taint coffee with burnt carcinogens.
- No toxic residues. The coffee beans are grown in rich, pristine soil, chemical-free with no toxic residues.
- No mold or fungus. Only specialty grade coffee beans are used to avoid mold and fungus typically found in coffee beans. "Specialty Grade" coffee beans are a special class that does not allow mold or fungus damage. The widespread growth of fungus is commonly found on lesser grade coffee beans.
- Accepted by the Gerson Institute. PureLife Medium Roast is accepted by the Gerson Institute as an exceptionally pure and effective coffee enema. It meets the Gerson Institute standards and is recommended for Gerson Therapy, GAPS Diet, and anyone desiring good liver detoxification.
Organic Enema Therapy Coffee - Medium Roast
100% Certified Organic, exceptionally pure, and air roasted with higher levels of cafestol and palmitic acid.
It's made from specialty grade coffee beans and meets Gerson standards.
2. What's The Best Coffee Enema Supplies To Buy?
For years, I've used the PureLife Enema supplies which are of the highest quality and made in the U.S. - not China.
Instead of purchasing your supplies separately, there are several different pre-made kits you can choose from:
Kit #1: PureLife Coffee Enema Kit - Basic
This kit is perfect for first-timers and is accepted by Gerson Institute.
It contains everything you need to perform a coffee enema with the finest equipment
(includes 1/2-pound organic medium roast enema coffee)
Kit #2: PureLife Coffee Enema Kit - Advanced
This kit is also perfect for first-timers and is accepted by Gerson Institute.
It contains everything you need to perform a coffee enema with the finest equipment
(includes 1-pound organic medium roast enema coffee + stainless steel coffee sieve)
3. Why Use Filtered / Purified Water To Do A Coffee Enema?
One very simple reason.
If you are doing a coffee enema for detoxification and healing, you are working to REMOVE toxins from your body, not ADD new ones.
A simple Google search will show you what harmful toxins are in tap water, like lead, mercury, pharmaceuticals, fluoride, and chlorine just to name a few.
Did you know that finished water can contain up to 59 different pesticides? Groundwater can contain up to 51 different pesticides and even bottled water can contain up to 11 different pesticides.
That's just pesticides and not lead, chlorine or pharmaceuticals.
You do not want to use or introduce toxic and contaminated tap water for this detoxification procedure.
If you are going to take the extra step to make sure you use the very best organic, non-toxic coffee available, please take one more important step to make sure you use the cleanest and purest water available.
Tap water is not that.
A Berkey Water Purification System is an excellent choice for using the cleanest and purest water possible.
It's the only water I use in my home - for cooking, drinking, and coffee enemas.
Remember, one of the main purposes of performing a coffee enema is to REMOVE toxins from your body, not ADD new ones.

How To Do A Coffee Enema: Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preparing The Enema Coffee
Firstly, you'll need to prepare the enema coffee which takes about 20 minutes + about another 30 minutes for it to cool off.
I usually start making it first thing in the morning, using a timer for the boil and simmer steps and then let it cool off well before I intend to use it around mid-morning.
You'll need to have organic enema coffee, filtered/purified water, an ultra-fine stainless steel sieve, and a 4-quart stainless steel saucepan. It is not recommended to use an aluminum saucepan or tap water. The ultra-fine sieve is important because you don't want to have coffee grinds in the enema coffee, which will happen if you don't use the correct sieve.
Next, add the filtered/purified water and organic enema coffee to your saucepan, stir, and then bring it to a boil.
Please note that because I have been doing these for years, I use the "Ultra Light Roast" coffee as shown below, however, if it is your first time or you are new to detoxing it is recommended to use "Medium Roast" coffee, which is darker in color.
Once it comes to a rolling boil, set the timer for 5 minutes and let it boil. Once the timer is finished, reduce the heat to low/medium, set the timer for 15 minutes, and let it simmer.
When the timer is finished, remove the saucepan from the stovetop and allow it to cool completely before using it.
Trust me - this is very important. Do not attempt to take the enema coffee directly from the stove to perform a coffee enema while the coffee is still hot.
If you're short on time, you can always place the saucepan in the refrigerator to cool it off quicker, but keep an eye on it because then you'll have the opposite problem - the enema coffee being too cold.
Step 2: Preparing The Coffee Enema
Secondly, while your enema coffee is simmering, you can start getting your area ready for the coffee enema.
- Set up a space to do your enema. You'll need to pick a place where the enema bag can be hung overhead, like near a door. There are various places you can do this, but the most practical is on your bathroom floor, to make clean up easy if you happen to have an "accident". Try to make it as cozy and relaxing as possible by laying one or two large old towels on the floor that you wouldn't mind getting stained if the enema coffee spills on it. You can even get a small pillow or roll up a towel to use as a pillow to support your head so you'll be comfortable.
- You will also want to have a small glass jar (no plastic) of organic coconut oil handy to use when you start the enema.
- Make sure you have a timer, watch or phone with a stopwatch so you can make sure you leave the enema coffee in for at least 15 minutes. You can also get anything else you might want to make the time relaxing like a book, music, etc.
Step 3: Perform The Coffee Enema
Thirdly, now that the enema coffee is cooled off and you have your area set up and ready to go, now it's time to actually perform the coffee enema.
You'll need to transfer the enema coffee into the enema bucket of your choice. I used to use the big red rubber enema bags but they were hard to clean and because I couldn't see the inside of the bag, I never knew if it was completely clean or not.
When I decided to change, I considered a glass enema bucket and the stainless steel bucket. I decided to go with the stainless steel bucket because it's sterile, easy to clean, doesn't stain, and won't break like the glass one.
Before you transfer the enema coffee into the enema bucket, make sure you close the tubing clamp. You will only need to forget to do this one time and you'll never do it again. If the tubing clamp is not closed and you pour the enema coffee into the enema bucket, it will go straight through the tube and onto your floor - a big mess!
Put the sieve on top of the enema bucket and carefully pour the enema coffee in.
Take your enema bucket into the bathroom and hang it over the area you've set up - no higher than 18 inches for best results. I hang mine on a doorknob and it works fine. The higher you hang it the faster the flow will be. If you find that it's not flowing through the tube, you may need to hang it a little higher.
You'll need to get the tip of the tubing ready by putting a tiny amount of coconut oil on it to make the insertion easy. However, using too much will have the opposite problem - the end of the tube not staying in place.
Get comfortable on your towel and insert the tip of the tubing into your rectum - it should not be painful. If it is, you may want to add a tiny bit more coconut oil.
Lay on your right side and release the tubing clamp. You'll feel a strange sensation as the bucket empties but it should not be painful. Ideally, you would want to empty the entire bucket but don't worry if you can't retain it all. Just close the clamp when you feel full.
Now you can set your timer for 15 minutes and just relax while retaining the enema coffee as long as possible, or the full 15 minutes.
When your timer is finished, close the tubing clamp, remove the tubing tip and go to the toilet and eliminate the enema coffee.
That's it!
Step 4: Cleaning Your Equipment
Fourthly, you will most definitely want to clean your enema equipment after each use for sanitary reasons, but also so it will be clean and ready to use for the next time.
- First, you'll want to clean the tubing tip. Just use a non-toxic liquid soap and clean the tip. You can also pour a little food-grade hydrogen peroxide over it after cleaning it.
- Second, you'll want to clean the bucket. Pour a little hydrogen peroxide into the bucket, swish it around and pour it out.
- Lastly, you'll want to clean the tubing. After cleaning the bucket, I add some more hydrogen peroxide to the bucket and then drain it through the tubing. After cleaning it, it's very important to make sure the tubing dries completely before storing. I usually hang it so it's not coiled up so no liquid remains inside and it can dry quicker. The tubing can be re-used if you take care of it and clean it properly but should be replaced within 1-2 years.
Step 5: Follow Up With Fresh Organic Juice
Lastly, it is recommended to drink fresh organic juice after you're finished to replace electrolytes that are lost.
Here's a list of some of the fresh juices I make to drink afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's The Best Enema Coffee To Buy?
You may be thinking you can just use your regular morning ground coffee for this, but it will not produce the detoxification benefits you are looking for, and here's why:
- Regular store-bought coffee is not the same as enema therapy coffee - even if it's organic.
- Enema therapy coffee must be a “clean” coffee since it will go into the liver.
- Enema therapy coffee should have a high enough cafestol content to open the bile ducts.
- The cleanest coffee is a special “air roast” process.
- The traditional drum roasting process causes beans to be burnt which is carcinogenic to the liver.
- Fine ground enema coffee will retain 100% of its cafestol and palmitic acid content for at least 8 months and up to 2 years.
- There is no difference in buying whole bean enema coffee or fine ground for enema use – both retain the same potency. This statement is supported by research done at US Coffee Association for enema use – both retain the same potency. This statement is supported by research done by U.S. Coffee Association.
- The lighter the color of the coffee, the stronger the cafestol.
- Gerson Therapy recommends medium roast, fine grind, for their patients.
- Enema coffee needs to be retained in the rectum for 15 minutes if possible for full effectiveness.
- The lighter the roast, the more powerful the cleanse.
What Is The Best Kit To Use?
There are several different types of enema buckets to use, such as a thick, red rubber bag, a plastic bucket, a glass bucket, and a stainless steel bucket.
However, based on my experience, I use and recommend a stainless steel bucket for the following reasons:
- The most recommended enema equipment is the stainless steel enema bucket, due to its non-toxicity and ability to be sterilized and cleaned.
- Plastic enema bags can leech toxins into your enema water.
- Most plastic enema bags are made in China and are not BPA-free.
- Stainless steel enema buckets are BPA-free.
- Medical grade silicone enema tubing is the highest grade and safest enema tubing you can buy.
- Food-grade PVC enema tubing is also safe to use for enemas, but cannot be cleaned as easily.
- PureLife medical-grade silicone enema tubing can be sterilized in boiling water.
- There are many different shaped enema nozzles to insert. The basic nozzle is called a straight-in enema nozzle.
- A colon tube, or enema catheter, or rectal catheter is for reaching higher up into the colon for a higher cleansing.
How Much Coffee Should I Use?
When you prepare your enema coffee, you should use (3) tablespoons of organic enema coffee with (4) cups filtered/purified water.
Can I Use Tap Water?
You technically could, but I do not recommend using tap water for this detoxification procedure due to the contaminants it contains.
I highly recommend using a Berkey Water Purification System for all your cooking and drinking water.
What Side Do I Lay On?
You should lay on your right side while administering the coffee enema.
How High Should I Hang The Bucket?
For best results and reduction of air pockets, the recommended height should be no higher than 18-inches.
What's The Best Kind Of Tubing To Buy?
The tubing that comes in the PureLife Enema Kit is the safest tubing available.
- Silicone medical-grade tubing
- Made to withstand high heat (for sterilization)
- 100% non-toxic
- BPA-free
- Latex-free
- Phthalate-free
- Translucent (ideal for making sure it's cleaned properly)
- Will not breakdown or disintegrate like cheap PVC tubing
The main thing to look for is if mold starts to appear which can result from not allowing the tubing to dry properly.
However, with proper cleaning and sterilization, your tubing should last approximately (2) years and you can buy replacement tubing here.
Are Coffee Enemas Safe?
Although coffee enemas are used as part of the Gerson Therapy cancer cure, you should always seek the advice of your physician before taking coffee enemas.
They are not for everyone, for example, certain individuals such as those who underwent chemotherapy should take great caution and should consult their doctor beforehand.
However, many people have had good results. This article from Gerson.org details who should and shouldn't use coffee enemas.
Can I Just Drink Coffee?
No, coffee enemas are not the same as drinking coffee. Drinking coffee can upset the intestines from its acid. But coffee given through an enema will not affect the intestines negatively.
What Should I Do After My Coffee Enema?
Coffee enemas should always be done together with plenty of organic juicing.
Drinking fresh juices with coffee enemas will ensure your body maintains the proper electrolytes and minerals you need.
Cleansing and nutrition go together. You can’t ignore either one.
Here are some of my favorite juices to make after a coffee enema:
Some other healthy options are organic coconut water or organic fresh watermelon.
Another nourishing recipe to make to help support the liver is Dr. Group's Liver Cleanse Soup.
