Raw Vegan Red Pepper Basil Creamy Pine Nut Pesto


Good things happen when I try to find something to make before it’s time to throw out veggies, like this Raw Vegan Red Pepper Basil Creamy Pine Nut Pesto.

Even though my red peppers weren’t quite ready to meet their demise, I knew had to hurry to find something yummy to make with them.

I also happened to have fresh basil so this recipe was perfect.

It has a sweetness from the basil and a little spicy from the cayenne pepper.

And, it can be made in your Vitamix faster than the time it takes for the pasta to cook.

It can be easily changed to a gluten-free dish just by using gluten-free pasta or a 100% raw dish by using veggie pasta made with a spiral vegetable slicer.

Tip #1:  You can substitute the pine nuts with either raw sunflower seeds or even raw cashews.

Tip #2:  While a pesto is traditionally used with pasta, I actually used mine over kale as a salad dressing sprinkled with hemp seeds for a nice change of pace.

Tip #3:  If you need this for more than 1-2 people, just double the ingredients in the recipe shown below.


Raw Vegan Red Pepper Basil Creamy Pine Nut Pesto

  • 1/2 cup raw pine nuts
  • 1 Medium organic red bell pepper (cored and cut into quarters)
  • 1/2 cup organic fresh basil leaves
  • 1 organic garlic clove (freshly crushed)
  • 1/4 cup organic extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon organic cayenne pepper (or to taste)
  • 1/8 teaspoon pink himalayan salt (or to taste)


Step 1 Put all ingredients into a Vitamix and blend until smooth and creamy.

Serve over freshly prepared pasta, or over a salad or even as a veggie dip.

    I am so trying this pesto! The photos are amazing, just can’t believe all those ingredients combined turned into this gorgeous colour. Wow! I can eat kale in any cooked/steamed food, but raw, I just haven’t got used to the taste, so this creamy pesto sounds perfect for a kale salad. And I love hemp seeds:)

      Hi Adriana! I know…the color actually throws you off because pesto is usually green and this one is a nice orange color from the red peppers.

      I was actually thinking, when I posted the red pepper and basil photo, hmmm…red + green = orange lol!

      Raw kale does taste a little different and I’m not sure why I like it so much, but I’ve only fallen in love with it within the last year.

      You might like a wilted/massaged kale salad better.

      I have a recipe to post for that soon and it even has hemp seeds…I think you’d like it!

      Hi Brittany! Oh snap…you’re right! I have the cayenne listed in the recipe (1/8 tsp or to taste) but forgot to add the garlic.

      It should be: (1) organic garlic clove – freshly crushed
